The 19th century castle

A leap back in time and here we are in front of a magnificent 19th century castle, inspired by Viollet-Le-Duc with its mixture of neo-Gothic and neo-Renaissance styles.
It was Pierre Magne, a lawyer from Périgueux who became Minister of Finance under Napoleon III, who acquired the estate in 1860 and had it rebuilt as a 19th-century château, a testament to architectural styles from different periods.
The latter was destroyed by fire in 1885 but rebuilt a year later by the daughter of the worthy minister, Marie Thirion de Montauban.
The castle still belongs to the descendants of Pierre Magne, the Mähler-Besse family.
Inside this château, a rich decor resembles a cabinet of curiosities. The objects and furnishings bear witness to the travels to Asia, North Africa, and South America of Pierre Magne's descendants, ambassadors and army officers.
The guided tour lasts 45 minutes to one hour and is by reservation only.
